Abstract

olysemy, in contrast to monosemy (a word having one meaning), can be defined as a linguistic unit changing its meaning following context. Ancient Arab linguists studied this phenomenon in the Holy Qur’an and called it “Al-Ishtirak Allafdhi” or “Al-Mushtarak Allafdhi". In Arabic, polysemy may be prepositional, verbal or nominal. This paper will discuss the various meanings of two words “Umma” and “Dean” as used in Qur’an and show how they can be translated Into English.
